{"id":28926,"date":"2014-02-14T10:33:47","date_gmt":"2014-02-14T15:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/?p=28926"},"modified":"2022-08-23T11:01:42","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T15:01:42","slug":"fight-of-the-bumblebee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/blog\/fight-of-the-bumblebee\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Fight&#8221; of the Bumblebee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.22&#8243;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.1&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Have you heard the common legend that scientists have <strong><em>proven<\/em><\/strong> that bumblebees, in terms\u00a0 of aerodynamics, can\u2019t fly?\u00a0 This is a myth that came about because about eighty years ago an aerodynamicist made this statement based on an assumption that the bees\u2019 wings were a smooth plane.\u00a0 It was reported by the media before the aerodynamicist actually looked at the wing under a microscope and found that the assumption was incorrect.\u00a0 While the scientist and the media issued retractions, the legend lives on.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28927\" src=\"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Bumblebee-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" style=\"float: right; padding: 0px 0px 0px 15px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, in the management world, decisions are made every day based on \u201clegends\u201d rather than on real evidence. At a manufacturing company I once worked for, it was a well-known \u201cfact\u201d that it was more profitable to discount prices to increase volume in a particular market.\u00a0 Even after a team of business managers proved discounting was a money loser, certain sales managers continued to rigorously advocate for the discount strategy <strong><em>for years<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 I like to refer to any ongoing argument like this as the <strong><em>&#8220;Fight&#8221; of the Bumblebee<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 This fight is the most difficult when the bumblebee argument is emotionally compelling (they\u2019re not supposed to be able to fly!) and the truth is difficult to convey (bumblebees\u2019 wings encounter <em>dynamic stall<\/em> in every <em>oscillation cycle<\/em>, whatever that means). Everyone loves a discount and can see pallets of product going out the door.\u00a0 Not everyone understands some of the indirect nuances that contribute to profit.<\/p>\n<p>Winning the fight of the bumblebee is dependent on making sure that you are interpreting, visualizing, and reporting performance information in a meaningful way.\u00a0 People have to be trained to appreciate the difference between gut instinct and data-driven decision making.\u00a0 Once they see analysis done well a couple of times, they will start asking for it.<\/p>\n<p>The key to interpreting a measurement is comparison. And the trick is to display the information in a way that effectively answers the question, <em>Compared to what<\/em>?\u00a0 Visualizing performance over time identifies trends that show data direction and development and provide context for the underlying story relative to strategy.
