My only response, at the time, was \u201cI don\u2019t know\u2026our process just works\u201d and to give him some real client examples.\u00a0\u00a0 But it bugged me that I couldn\u2019t explain exactly HOW it works.<\/p>\n

As an engineer, I am driven to understand how things work\u2026and thus began the 4 year quest.\u00a0 I started paying attention to when and how that \u201cflash of visionary inspiration\u201d happens when we work with consulting clients.<\/p>\n

And my quest to understand HOW the process works led me to a variety of studies in strategy, innovation, neuroscience, leadership, psychology, business history, and military history.\u00a0 Along the way, I discovered that there are actually TWO definitions of \u201cstrategy\u201d1<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But most of us, are only familiar with one!\u00a0 Did you know that?\u00a0 I was stunned.<\/p>\n

In the 1830\u2019s, the definition of strategy \u201clost\u201d a key component when two strategy books were written based on the successes of Napoleon.\u00a0 The first was written by a German, Clausewitz, and this dense, hard-to-read tome carried forward the full definition of strategy from the earliest thinkers on the topic of strategy, from Sun Tzu forward.\u00a0 The second book, written in French by Jomini, was much easier for readers to understand.\u00a0 But Jomini\u2019s book left out a portion of what Clausewitz and all prior writers had included in their definition of strategy.<\/p>\n

Fast forward from 1830 and you\u2019ll see that military strategists relied upon Jomini\u2019s writings\u2026and business strategy concepts evolved from military strategy.\u00a0 Consequently, the definition of strategy that most of us are familiar with is actually only a PARTIAL definition.\u00a0\u00a0 Today, we define strategy as \u201chow to get from Point A to Point B.\u201d<\/p>\n

The missing component of strategy, which was dropped by Jomini in the 1830\u2019s, is:\u00a0 How to determine the strategically unique \u201cPoint B\u201d in the first place \u2013 not just choosing an obvious \u201cPoint B\u201d that others in your industry are likely to choose.\u00a0\u00a0 This strategic inspiration is what we associate with visionary leaders.<\/p>\n

I know that the Institute\u2019s strategic planning process is unique because we (admittedly unknowingly) have always incorporated the FULL definition of strategy – our clients regularly have strategic insights regarding \u201cPoint B\u201d and then we develop a strategy to get from Point A to Point B.\u00a0 But to understand HOW our process facilitates the mysterious \u201cinspiration\u201d part of strategic visioning, I had to study further.<\/p>\n

Neuroscience and writers in the field of innovation tell us that creative ideas are nothing more than the brain combining bits of already known information in a new way.\u00a0 If you look at scientific discovery, the arts, history\u2026you see this is true.\u00a0 In my study of innovation, I\u2019ve yet to see an example of a truly original idea.\u00a0 In reality, ideas build upon pre-existing information and combine things in new ways.<\/p>\n

By way of example: Steve Jobs had a spark of inspiration when he visited Xerox and they showed him their research into GUI (Graphical User Interface) and he imagined combining this with a desktop computer. Henry Ford had a spark of inspiration when he visited an animal processing plant and imagined reversing the \u201canimal disassembly line\u201d and, instead, creating a moving assembly line to build an automobile.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been privy to watch flashes of inspiration happen when a client combines things in a new way and realizes \u201cthere is our Point B!\u201d\u00a0 So HOW, exactly, do we incubate strategic visioning?\u00a0\u00a0 And that\u2019s when I had my own \u201caha!\u201d moment.\u00a0 To \u201cincubate\u201d means to ensure the right conditions exist for something to take form.\u00a0 And THAT\u2019S the secret!<\/p>\n

So what are these conditions?\u00a0 First, the brain needs to contain lots of information and ideas to have fodder for new combinations.\u00a0\u00a0 The Institute\u2019s proprietary strategic planning process stocks and stimulates the brain via the strategic thinking exercises we lead the client to perform, as well as via our use of diverse teams (which brings more information, facts, and ideas into the process).\u00a0 The more you have to work with, the more likely you are to find an innovative combination.<\/p>\n

Second, one\u2019s mind must relax.\u00a0 Ever notice how your best ideas come when your mind is calm?\u00a0 In the shower?\u00a0 While jogging? While you are half asleep?\u00a0 That\u2019s when your brain is free to combine things in new and innovative ways.\u00a0 Our workshops are conducted in stress-free locations. And we simply lead the team, step by step, through various strategic thinking and decision-making exercises in a relaxed environment.\u00a0 There is no pressure or expectations for the leadership team to come up with something brilliant.\u00a0 We simply work through our proven process.<\/p>\n

So, the answer that I have come to, after four long years, is that you need to create the right conditions to be \u201cvisionary\u201d.\u00a0 A leader can prepare him\/herself by constantly learning.\u00a0 Read.\u00a0 Study.\u00a0 Attend seminars.\u00a0 Network.\u00a0 Get out and visit other companies.\u00a0 Steve Jobs visited Xerox.\u00a0 Henry Ford visited the animal processing plant.\u00a0 Both had numerous outside interests.\u00a0 The more you learn and experience, the more information you will have in your head.\u00a0\u00a0 Then, relax.\u00a0 Free your mind and let inspiration find YOU.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, I came to realize that a good leader doesn\u2019t have to have all the answers. The Institute\u2019s inclusive process actually takes the burden off of the leader and leverages the innovation potential throughout the organization.\u00a0 When all staff understand the big picture, this information gets combined with everything the staff knows and has experienced\u2026.and creative ideas spark!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At one client, the factory union steward is the individual who actually had the eureka moment regarding the future of the company.<\/p>\n
