{"id":29017,"date":"2013-11-22T15:49:37","date_gmt":"2013-11-22T20:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/?p=29017"},"modified":"2022-08-23T11:04:14","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T15:04:14","slug":"are-strategic-leaps-of-logic-leaving-you-dazed-and-confused","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/blog\/are-strategic-leaps-of-logic-leaving-you-dazed-and-confused\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Strategic \u201cLeaps of Logic\u201d Leaving You Dazed and Confused?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.89&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever known someone whose brain works faster than they can talk or write?\u00a0 They often appear to be making leaps of logic when actually, their brain is working through logical steps but they are only communicating their first and last thought in the flow&#8230;not the thoughts in the middle.\u00a0\u00a0I have found that many CEO\u2019s suffer from a similar \u201cproblem.\u201d\u00a0 Often, they have a strategy in their heads yet it appears to others that they have made a giant leap from vision to KPIs or initiatives.\u00a0\u00a0 So while the CEO usually understands how the pieces fit together, most employees are not mind-readers and cannot follow the \u201cleaps of logic\u201d.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29018 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Leaping-Frog-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Leaping-Frog-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Leaping-Frog.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This point was vividly illustrated to me in a phone call I had last week.\u00a0 A CEO called to say he wanted to use a balanced scorecard \u2013 he had seen a competitor company achieve outstanding performance which they attributed to their use of balanced scorecard.\u00a0\u00a0 Furthermore, he had already figured out the five most important KPIs for his own company&#8230;and he asked if we could help him get the managers and employees in his 36 locations to understand and get motivated to take action in alignment with these 5 KPIs.\u00a0SIGH&#8230;.I knew it would be a long conversation but he was so sincere and motivated that I dove in and began to try and pull the \u201cmiddle part\u201d out of his head by asking him questions.<\/p>\n<p>He had a very clear picture of the future state of his company and his descriptions were compelling and detailed.\u00a0 As we talked, I began to loosely translate his word images to strategic objectives&#8230;I could almost create a strategy map from his stories.\u00a0 And that\u2019s ONE point:\u00a0 A strategy map tells a story, it paints the picture of the organization\u2019s future state and how it plans to get there.\u00a0 He seemingly skipped this and other important steps when he leaped from vision to KPI\u2019s and, therefore, he was missing the logical linkages.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore as I helped him cross-walk his 5 KPIs to the potential objectives,\u00a0 I was able to show him that his KPIs were all in the results perspective(financial and customer)&#8230;he hadn\u2019t fully considered the\u00a0 driver KPIs that would be needed until I asked enough questions to start teasing the driver strategic objectives out of his head.\u00a0 In other words, he was asking his employees to focus on end results without articulating a strategy to achieve those results.<\/p>\n<p>After about an hour he said, \u201cI get it.\u00a0<em><strong> I skipped the middle part<\/strong><\/em> and that\u2019s the MOST important part.
