My father showed me how fun math was when I was a child as we built motors together and played around with electronics&#8230;scribbling equations and schematics as we went.\u00a0 I never feared math and science&#8230;they were FUN!\n\nIn my work life, I\u2019ve discovered that dread of math, especially statistics, is widespread in the business community.\u00a0\u00a0 So let\u2019s tackle something fun:\u00a0 <strong><em>the concept of correlation<\/em><\/strong>.\n\nWhen developing performance measures in business, we sometimes face a stumbling block in that the thing we desire most to measure is, unfortunately, impossible to measure <strong><em>directly<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 So, we have to look for a \u201cproxy\u201d measure that is <strong><em>correlated<\/em><\/strong>.\n\nLet me illustrate with an example from daily life.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say I want to know if I am maintaining my ideal weight versus gaining weight.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to measure that <strong><em>directly<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; hop on the bathroom scale.\u00a0 But, unfortunately, I can\u2019t.\u00a0 I travel constantly so I do not have a bathroom scale with me most days.\n\nSo I have a <em><strong>correlate<\/strong><\/em> that I measure.\u00a0 I always carry the same pair of skinny jeans with me.\u00a0 As long as the jeans will button, I am fairly certain of what the bathroom scale might say, if I had one.\u00a0 The fit of my jeans is <em><strong>correlated<\/strong><\/em> to my weight.\u00a0\u00a0 Now, a statistician will remind us that \u201ccorrelation does not equal causation.\u201d\u00a0 This simply means is that I need to consider that other things may be causing my jeans not to fit \u2013 for example, maybe they shrunk in the wash.\u00a0 But understanding this, I am reasonably certain that they are a good proxy measure while on the road.\n\nSee how easy it was to master\u00a0two important concepts for measuring performance in business &#8211; <strong><em>Direct Measure<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Correlated Measure<\/em><\/strong>?\u00a0 It\u2019s all about the attitude!!\n\nTo learn much, much more about how to develop meaningful performance measures, we invite you to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/Shop\/ProductDetails\/tabid\/498\/ProductID\/1\/Default.aspx\"><em>The Institute Way<\/em><\/a> or join us at an <a href=\"https:\/\/balancedscorecard.org\/staging\/TrainingCertification\/CourseSchedule\/tabid\/71\/Default.aspx\">upcoming training course<\/a>.\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am an engineer by training and a math geek at heart.\u00a0 So articles about girls and math catch my eye.\u00a0 Did you know that researchers agree that one\u2019s ability to excel at math and science is as much about attitude as it is about \u201cnatural gifts\u201d or gender?\u00a0 This affirms my own less-than-scientific research [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":44630,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","content-type":"","footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[19,13,15],"class_list":["post-29037","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-analysis-reporting","tag-kpi-performance-measurement","tag-strategy-execution"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v20.13 (Yoast SEO v23.3) -
